Juliet has been working with our daughter Sofia since year 6, just after she was diagnosed with dyslexia. Even during the time that Juliet did not have a regular slot available for us (due to existing commitments) she found time to support Sofia during school holidays and before her senior entry exam.

Juliet has a clear understanding of the struggles of learning difficulties and the impact that these can have on concentration and confidence for the students and managed to connect with Sofia in a personal and empathetic way. I asked Sofia why she enjoys her sessions with Juliet and she said that Juliet really takes the time to understand what she needs and gives her new ways to learn and concentrate that work for her.

Juliet worked with our daughter, mostly on her maths and a little on her English, for around 18 months.  The difference she made in that time was remarkable.  She quickly got to know our girl and adapted the sessions to her.  Naturally this included her learning needs, devising a plan that complemented what was happening in school and the areas where she needed support.  But more importantly, she tailored her approach to our daughter’s interests, personality and mood.  She harnessed enthusiasm, found ways to bolster confidence, and quickly learned how to overcome doubts, on a lesson by lesson basis.   She treats her students with respect and good humour, and was very open with us all about how each session had gone.  Our daughter hasn’t just gained a better understanding of the topics she was struggling with, she’s armed with tools and approaches that keep her calm and focused in exams that would previously have made her anxious.  Seeing her go into school on a test day without nerves has been just as important as seeing her come home clutching results she’s proud of.  For us, Juliet’s impact has been invaluable.

My eight year old son is an intelligent boy, but he finds it very difficult to write.  From the age of three, however delicate his teachers were, he was well aware that his writing mostly fell short of what was expected at school.  This had led, not only to challenges with his appetite to learn, but also his confidence and general happiness.  Spending time with Juliet has really, really helped with these three things.  She has not only helped him with his technical ability, but has made learning fun and restored his confidence in his own abilities.

Juliet taught my daughter in year two. In the July of that year, at the tender age of just six, she lost her dad after a long battle with cancer. Juliet was there for her when she returned in the September, and from the very beginning, she created the perfect environment for her to learn and grieve in equal measures. I will always be so grateful to Juliet for the love, support and energy she invested in my daughter. She gave her the space to grow, to thrive, and to find out who she was with no pressure at all. She blossomed that year, and I have no hesitation to say that she is the confident, intelligent teenager she is today, about to embark on her GCSE’s, because one teacher took the time to stop, think about what my daughter needed, and give her the love that she really needed.
